CPID vs PTA Approval: What CPID Patching Is, and Why It Is Risky

Some sellers advertise phones as "CPID approved" as if it were the same as PTA approval. It is not. CPID "approval" is an unofficial software modification that rewrites the phone's IMEI — and it carries serious legal and practical risks. Here is what it really is.

What Is CPID / Patch Approval?

CPID (a term from the repair/patching community) refers to a process where a phone's IMEI is changed through unofficial software tools to match a different IMEI that is already PTA-compliant. The patched phone then appears "approved" on a network check because the network sees the borrowed IMEI — not the phone's real one.

To be blunt: CPID "approval" is IMEI tampering. The phone was never registered with PTA; it is wearing someone else's registration.

Why Sellers Do It

• It makes a non-PTA phone (often imported unofficially or JV) pass the quick SMS-to-8484 check — at first glance.
• It lets sellers charge closer to PTA-approved prices for phones that never went through official registration.
• The customer discovers the truth only later — when the patch fails, the phone is re-checked, or both phones sharing the IMEI run into problems.

The Legal Risk: PECA 2016

Changing or tampering with a phone's IMEI is an offence under Pakistan's Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, which provides punishment of up to 3 years imprisonment or a fine of up to Rs. 1 million, or both. This applies to whoever does the tampering — and buyers of tampered phones can be caught up in investigations, especially if the original IMEI belonged to a stolen device.

Practical Risks of a CPID Phone

• The patch can break. Software updates, factory resets, or PTA database reconciliations can expose the mismatch — leaving you with a blocked or non-compliant phone and no official path to fix it.
• Two phones, one IMEI. If the original owner of the borrowed IMEI uses their phone, network conflicts and investigations can follow — for both parties.
• No warranty, no service. No authorised service centre will touch a tampered device.
• Resale value near zero. Any knowledgeable buyer who checks properly will walk away.
• You paid PTA prices for a non-PTA phone. This is the core of the scam.

How to Detect a CPID / Patched Phone

1. Check the IMEI on the 8484 reply against the phone's *#06#. Send the phone's *#06# IMEI to 8484. If the reply's brand/model does not match the phone in your hand, the IMEI has been swapped.
2. Compare IMEI sources. The *#06# IMEI, Settings IMEI, and box-sticker IMEI should all match each other and the PTA record. Mismatches are a red flag.
3. Watch for "already registered" oddities. A phone sold as "new" that is registered under someone else's details is suspicious.
4. Ask directly: "Is this CPID/patched, or genuinely PTA registered?" A dodgy answer is itself an answer.
