Huawei Mate X — Full Specifications, Features & Price in Pakistan

The Huawei Mate X is where the Mate X story began: Huawei's first foldable smartphone, unveiled in 2019 with a radical outward-folding "Falcon Wing" design that turned an 8-inch tablet into a phone. It is discontinued, never officially sold in Pakistan, and extraordinarily rare on the used market — but it has one distinction none of its successors can claim: it shipped with full Google apps. This guide covers its verified specifications, Pakistan price expectations, and the honest trade-offs of buying a 2019 foldable in 2026.

Key Specifications at a Glance

Design and Build Quality

The Mate X folds the wrong way round on purpose: the single OLED wraps around the outside, so there is no separate inner screen and no visible crease when unfolded — just one continuous 8-inch display. At 5.4 mm unfolded it was astonishingly thin for 2019. The price of that elegance is exposure: the display is on the outside whenever the phone is folded, so scratches are a far bigger threat than on later inward-folding models. Inspect the screen under bright light for micro-scratches before any deal.

Display Features

Unfolded you get an 8.0-inch OLED at 2200 x 2480; folded, the front works as a 6.6-inch phone and the back as a 6.38-inch display — the rear screen even serves as the viewfinder for selfies. It is a 60Hz panel, and by 2026 standards it is dimmer and less refined than modern LTPO foldables, but the crease-free unfolded surface still feels remarkable. Huawei's Falcon Wing hinge held the display flat with no gap when folded.

Processor and Performance

The Kirin 980 (7nm) with the Balong 5000 5G modem was Huawei's 2018 flagship platform, paired with 8GB RAM and the Mali-G76 MP10 GPU. It handles everyday apps and streaming in 2026, but it is well behind modern chips for gaming and heavy multitasking. Note the software ceiling: Android 9 with no further major updates.

RAM and Storage

A single generous configuration: 8GB of RAM with 512GB of built-in storage. A Nano Memory (NM) card slot supporting up to 256GB is available, but it shares the second SIM slot — dual SIM or extra storage, not both. 512GB built in means most buyers will never need the card.

Camera Features

The Leica quad camera — 40MP wide, 16MP ultrawide, 8MP telephoto, and a TOF 3D sensor — was flagship-grade in 2019. Because the display folds outward, these same cameras become the front cameras: flip the folded phone around and the rear screen becomes your selfie viewfinder, with a flash and a 40MP sensor no punch-hole selfie camera can match. Low-light and zoom are far behind 2026 flagships, but the concept remains clever.

Battery and Charging

A 4,500mAh battery with 55W Huawei SuperCharge — Huawei claimed 0 to 90% in about 30 minutes at launch, which was extraordinary in 2019 and still respectable. A used unit's battery will have degraded; test endurance and charging speed in person. There is no wireless charging.

Software and Updates

This is the Mate X's unique selling point among Huawei foldables: it runs Android 9.0 with EMUI 9.1 and full Google Play services — it launched before the restrictions, so the Play Store, Gmail, and Maps work normally. The catch is that it never moved beyond Android 9, so some modern apps may refuse to install. Verify your essential apps on the device before buying.

Connectivity and Additional Features

5G support via the Balong 5000 modem — the Mate X was marketed as the world's first foldable 5G smartphone — plus 4G LTE, dual Nano-SIM, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, infrared port, and USB-C 3.1. Side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Variants, Colours and Availability

One variant only: 8GB + 512GB in Interstellar Blue. The Mate X was never officially launched in Pakistan — it sold in limited quantities in China and select markets — so any unit in Pakistan is an import on the used market. Spare parts, including the folding display, are effectively unavailable, so buy only a unit that is perfect today.

Price in Pakistan and PTA Information

WhatMobile lists an expected price of Rs. 350,000, and a retailer archive showed Rs. 348,500 — both estimates, since the phone was never officially sold here. Its 2019 launch price was about €2,299 (roughly Rs. 364,000 at the time). Actual used prices today depend entirely on condition and rarity, so confirm the current asking price with Zohaan Mobile Gallery. Given the price level, PTA verification is essential.

PTA: PTA approval applies per device and IMEI, not per model. Before paying, send the phone's IMEI to 8484 and confirm "Compliant" status. How to check PTA approval and how to check the IMEI before you hand over any money.

Final Verdict

The Mate X is a museum-grade foldable: the first of its line, the only one with Google apps, and still a conversation piece. But it is a collector's purchase, not a practical one — exposed folding screen, no parts, Android 9, and a price that buys a brand-new flagship foldable. Buy it for the history, with your eyes open.
